With woodcut initials and head- and tail-pieces throughout. Title page printed in red and black. Contemporary full paneled calf. Boards tooled in blind. Board edges tooled in gilt. All edges speckled red. Outer hinges and spine repaired. Some rubbing to boards and corners. Contemporary small ink signature on title-page. Some occasional marginal worming, not affecting text. Some dampstaining to plates XIV, XVIII and XXV and to signatures 3S-3X. Overall a very good copy. The first translation into English of Nicholas Bion's classic technical work is supplemented by Stone's revisions and additions, which supplement the original text with English tools, standards, and practices. A fascinating and compendious work which authoritatively details the scientific instruments of the day, including microscopes, telescopes, micrometers, quadrants, water clocks, slide rules, and sectors, among others.
