First Appearances of seven Conan Doyle stories: How the Brigadier Held the King; How the King Held the Brigadier; How the Brigadier Slew the Brothers of Ajaccio; How the Brigadier Came to the Castle of Gloom; How the Brigadier Took the Field Against the Marshal Millefleurs; How the Brigadier Was Tempted by the Devil; and How the Brigadier Played for a Kingdom, all illustrated by W. B. Wollen. The stories were later collected in The Exploits of Brigadier Gerard (1896).

Large octavo (8vo). Two volumes, complete 1895 year of The Strand Magazine. Original publisher?s blue pictorial cloth, front boards and spines decorated and lettered in gilt and black. Profusely illustrated throughout with full-page and in-text illustrations.

Volumes also contain Stories from the Diary of a Doctor: Second Series by L. T. Meade and Clifford Halifax, M.D., continuing through all twelve parts across the two volumes, together with the regular Portraits of Celebrities at Different Times of Their Lives feature.

Contents generally clean and unmarked, with occasional spotting or stains. Bindings remain sound and square. Boards with light to moderate rubbing and wear on spine crowns and tails; vol. IX: with split cloth on lower sides of the spine. A Good+ to V.G.- two-volume Strand set containing The Exploits of Brigadier Gerard across the complete 1895 year.
