Gr 9 Up-An overview of changes in and expectations of gender roles especially over the last 30 years. Hanan begins with a look back at gender roles throughout history, then goes on to examine particular areas of current culture, including family and social interaction, education and career (including military), personal appearance, and media influences. Fictional "snapshots" of teens in various situations are scattered throughout the text, lending some personal interest to an otherwise dry treatment of the topic. No illustrations of any kind break up the text. The author presents a balanced look at the issue and subtly encourages young adults to explore all options that interest them, regardless of traditional stereotypes or societal pressure.
