About this Item
A lovely first printing of this beloved story about a bear, a little girl, and how they became friends. In 2012 School Library Journal named Corduroy one of the "Top 100 Picture Books for the 21st Century" (#22), and in 2013 The New York Public Library named Corduroy one of the 100 Great Children's Books from the Last 100 Years. Nearly 20 million copies have been sold. Freeman was pleased with the book himself; his son, Roy, in 2019 posted this on his website about his father: "In a letter from March 1967 Don (in New York) wrote to my mother, Lydia, (in California) that he was working on a children?s book idea, ". I think you'll also love it. Frankly, I think it has more depth and feeling and simplicity than anything I've yet done. It takes place in a department store and also in the home of a little Afro-American girl. I thought of calling it 'A Button for Corduroy,' still haven?t decided. I?ll finish the book here.? This copy is tight, square, bright, crisp, and perfectly clean but for a few light smudges to the lower margin on two pages (see photos). No previous owner name, bookplates, or any other writing or marks. Beautiful. The price-clipped jacket has a little chipping and wear to the spine and a short tear to back panel, light rubbing to jacket tips, very clean, very attractive. Beyond scarce in this condition.
