About this Item
First edition. Issued as a give-away with the purchase of a pack of "Egyptienne Straights' Cigarettes" with "One Story accompanying each package". Miniature book measuring 2.25" x 2.75". 30pp. Illustrated with frontispiece in color and vignettes. Stapled pictorial wrappers reproducing a drawing in color of gamblers sitting at a poker table, with one man holding large stacks of poker chips while a police officer approaches. A near fine copy with light foxing on rear cover. A scarce publication, possibly John Reed's first separately published work of fiction. *OCLC* lists a single copy. A short story by John Reed about a poker game set in Chihuahua, Mexico. The introduction states: "The story given herewith is from the September Metropolitan and is by John Reed, who writes fiction and articles exclusively for the Metropolitan". Reed, in the fall of 1913, was sent to Mexico by 'Metropolitan Magazine' to report on the Mexican Revolution, which led to the publication of this short story, and eventually also resulted in the publication of John Reed's book 'Insurgent Mexico' (published in 1914 by D.
