Anne Wilkinson (1910-1961) was a significant poet in the Canadian modernist movement, and one of the few women active in the movement in the 1940s and '50s. She published two poetry collection, this one, and another in 1955 called The Hangman Ties the Holly. She was also a founding editor of an important Canadian literary journal, The Tamarack Review.

This collection is number eight in the New Writers Series published by First Statement. Originally a Montreal-based literary magazine, focused on Canadian modernist poetry and founded by John Sutherland, an associated press later emerged. First Statement Press published a number of important Canadian works and authors, including Other Canadians: An Anthology of New Poetry in Canada, 1940-46, as well as the first two monographs produced by Irving Layton.
