Fatchen, an Australian poet, offers 41 poems that explore both day-to-day rural existence and universal silliness. The title is apt--reading this book is like waiting for mail, for readers will eagerly scan each page to see what is coming next. Whether in a cycle of dinosaur poems or while describing a shipwreck that may be haunted, Fatchen's language and images are fresh and accessible. O'Neill's black-and-white watercolor and ink drawings extend the mood of each poem--her people and animals are an integral part of the text. Readers might hope that the mail brings more from Fatchen and O'Neill; their teamwork is reminiscent of Michael Rosen and Quentin Blake's Quick, Let's Get Out of Here (1984) or Wouldn't You Like To Know (1980; o.p., both Andre Deutsch).
