Octavo. In two volumes. 374 and 464pp., illustrated. The first volume includes spherical astronomy, description of instruments. error theory, geodesy, and mathematical geography. The second volume includes solar astronomy, moon theory, and navigation. This is essentially an Ecole Polytechnique Astronomy Course. The Ecole Polytechnique, which was established in 1794, is one of the most prestigious and selective grandes écoles in France, a constituent member of the Polytechnic Institute of Paris. The author and French astronomer Herve Faye became an instructor in geodesy at the Polytechnique in 1848 and served as President of the International Geodetic Association from 1892 to 1902., the year of his death. A very nice set bound in 1/4 calf over French marbled paper boards., flat spine lettered and ruled in gilt, previous owner's stamp to front free endpapers. A clean bright set.
