About this Item

Description:

Good; spine tanned; rubbing/bumping and a little fraying to extremities; whitish stains to cloth on rear cover; front hinge starting, but only partly; owner name to half-title page, with offsetting to facing page; else Fine. No dust jacket. First Edition. Richard Franklin Pettigrew (1848 - 1926) was an American lawyer, surveyor, and land developer. He represented the Dakota Territory in the U.S. Congress and, after the Dakotas were admitted as States, he was the first U.S. Senator from South Dakota. He was noted as a vocal anti-imperialist during the McKinley/Roosevelt years of U.S. imperial expansion; in this book he exposes the economic and ideological roots of imperialism and excoriates its practitioners. In 1917, Pettigrew stated that the First World War was a capitalist scheme intended to further enrich the wealthy, and he urged young men to evade the draft. He was indicted for violating the Espionage Act, the same charge for which Socialist leader Eugene V. Debs served a ten-year Federal prison sentence, but the charges were ultimately dropped.
