The British Galleries were opened at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2001 to huge international acclaim and have subsequently won awards. The environmentally controlled galleries allowed, for the first time in the Museum's history, all of the categories of British decorative and fine art to be displayed including textiles, lacquer, works on paper and the most fragile gilding. About the Author:

Christopher Wilk is Keeper of Furniture, Textiles & Fashion at the V&A. He was Project Leader for the British Galleries and is currently working on a major exhibition on Modernism, opening in 2006. Nick Humphrey is a Curator in the V&A's Department of Furniture, Textiles & Fashion. He was also a key member of the British Galleries team.
