8vo. xiii, [5], 350 pp. Photo frontisp., numerous photo plates, many text illustrations & ornament by Alexander King. Quarter mustard-coloured cloth over batik illustrated boards, black lettering on spine, black embroidered bookmark bound-in (minor shelfwear, light rubbing), w/ d.j. Art Deco pictorial cover art by J.L. Orrick (minor chipping head of spine, 1 small tear at fore-edge, light darkening, and very slight sunning), still VG/VG- copy. First edition of the author's first book on travels through Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Celebes (Sulawesi), and Bali between the Wars. His deep knowledge of speaking and reading English, French, German, Spanish, Malay & Javanese, allow De Leeuw to incorporate many first hand anthropological observations, and discussions of social history, customs, architecture, and other Indonesian achievements. Very scarce in the original dustjacket.
