Single card sheet, 297 x 210mm. [200 copies printed, undated but 1987]. One of 28 broadside poems in the series The Cat and the Cuckoo, produced as a freelance venture by the author and the artist. The intention was to issue them signed by both, sold as a set (at £450) and individually (£20), but in the event very few were issued, and signed ones are all but invisible on the market. "Published" in May 1987, they were gathered four months later into a (much smaller format) book, also under the Sunstone Press imprint, which, too, struggled to sell, even when Fabers (perhaps half-heartedly) took on the stock. The broadsides are handsome, decorative and consequently rare. Ted Hughes first collaborated with the painter Reg Lloyd, 24 miles away from him in Devon at Bideford, in 1970 - on four broadside Crow poems. In 1984, for Faber and Faber, Lloyd designed and illustrated Hughes's "farmyard fable for the young", What is the Truth?, which won the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize. The Cat and the Cuckoo was, Hughes told Ann Skea, the pair's "naughty adventure".
