Clean book in blue cloth with some rubbing to edges, bumped lower corner, slight lean, solid hinges. Matte dust jacket present with some chips and loss up to an inch, or more in one spot, to top and bottom of spine and near flap folds, now in mylar protector. Original $1.90 price intact, though all four flaps are shallowly clipped. Contains many beginners' cryptographic puzzles, and clues thereto in a separate section. An early work by Margaret Petherbridge Farrar, who compiled The Cross Word Puzzle Book in 1924, which launched Simon & Schuster as a major publisher and was the first of four bestselling compilations published that year. Simon & Schuster's crossword books became the longest continuously published book series. She continued to work on crossword puzzles for the publisher. In 1959, a New Yorker article described Farrar as "[p]robably the most important person in the world of the crossword puzzle." [Wikipedia] 138 pp.
