Item description from seller

Hardcover. First Edition. A Czech novel first published as a newspaper serial. "Tesnohlidek's many-layered story of tangled human and animal relationships juxtaposes a world of not-so-innocent animals, living out brief lives in brutal harmony, with another world of longer-lived humans, who are no less brutal, scarcely more intelligent, and a good deal less happy. Deftly posed between poetry and farce ." (jacket). Despite its popularity, this is the first English translation. Bound in dark green cloth boards with gilt title to spine. Clean except for soiling to bottom of fore-edge of textblock. In tan illustrated jacket with dark brown title to spine and front panels. Jacket is price-clipped and faded along spine panel. Light wear to edges of jacket. 186 pages. LIT/022823.
