In this collection of lectures, which he delivered at Harvard in the early 1950s, Vladimir Nabokov shares insights based on a chapter-by-chapter synopsis of the seventeenth-century novel by Miguel de Cervantes, a timeless classic and one of the most deeply influential works in all of Western literature.

Rejecting the common interpretation of Don Quixote as a warm satire, Nabokov perceives the work as a catalog of cruelty through which the gaunt knight passes.

About the Author

Vladimir Nabokov naci� en San Petersburgo en el seno de una familia de la aristocracia en 1899, pero su trayectoria familiar primero, y luego sus inquietudes personales, lo llevaron a Alemania, Inglaterra, Francia y Estados Unidos, donde inici� una brillante carrera como poeta, novelista, cr�tico y traductor, a la vez que ense�aba literatura en varias universidades de prestigio. Sus novelas Mashenka (1926), Rey, Dama, Valet (1928), La defensa (1930), Gloria (1932), Risa en la oscuridad (1933), Desesperaci�n y La d�diva (ambas de 1934), Invitado a una decapitaci�n (1938), El ojo (1937), El hechicero (1939), La verdadera vida de Sebasti�n Knight (1941) y �ltima Thule (1942) precedieron el �xito monumental de Lolita (1955) que le permiti� abandonar la ense�anza y consagrarse por entero a su vocaci�n de escritor. Despu�s llegaron otras obras como Pnin (1957), P�lido fuego (1962), Ada o el ardor (1969), Cosas transparentes (1972), �Mira los arlequines! (1974) y la inacabada El original de Laura, publicada p�stumamente en 2009. Entre sus obras de no ficci�n cabe destacar su autobiograf�a Habla, memoria (1951) y ensayos literarios como Nikol�i G�gol (1944) o sus cursos de literatura europea, sobre el Quijote o sobre la literatura rusa. En 1961 se traslad� a Suiza, donde muri� en 1977.
