Item description from seller

LUTHER HIGH SPOT in dark blue decorated boards, illustrated dust jacket, endpaper maps, 8 illlus. and 1 map (listed), biblio., index, 184pp. Luther #193. Dowd # 3035. O'Keefe #2420. Very Good+ in Very Good+ dust jacket with mylar. Just the book for those who enjoy the study of Custer literature, with a 20-page bibliographical survey of the early (1876-1900) works on Custer's Last Stand. The "great controversy," essentially started by Frederick Whittaker with his book "A Complete Life of Gen. George A. Custer" (#2540), was over the degree to which Custer and Major Reno and their actions were to blame for the 7th's defeat. The great debate centered around whether or not Custer disobeyed Gen. Terry's orders. Utley explores the literary responses to the battle as well as the origin, growth and evolution of the Custer legend. A classic and excellent.
