24mo. Burgundy cloth with gilt spine lettering, dust jacket. 303pp. Illustrations, tables. Fine/fine. Non-authorial gift inscription on front flyleaf. Pristine, tight first facsimile reprint of the 1865 second edition (Philadelphia: Lippincott) of this -- take a deep breath -- (to cite subtitle) "Hand-Book for the Rank and File of the Army Showing What Are the Rights and Duties, How to Obtain the Former and Perform the Latter, and Thereby Enabling Them to Seek Promotion and Distinction in the Service of Their Country." This copy bears a unique frontispiece, for tipped in facing the title page is a Civil War era or perhaps later 19th century 2½" X 3½" glossy photographic print of a head-and-shoulders portrait of Kautz in full Union uniform, tipped to a salmon heavy card stock mount (3½" X 5", same as book trim size) near the bottom of which "Gen. Kautz" has been penned in 19th century ink (not in Kautz's hand). This image is not a carte-de-visite, but some other type of period portrait reproduced for we-know-not what purpose. Kautz (1828-95) was a German-American career officer who served in the U.S. Cavalry with distinction during the Civil War and rose to the rank of brevet major general, also authoring several military duties and customs manuals such as this. A superb and delightful extra-illustrated copy. Seller Inventory # 50206
This was the Civil War soldier's and NCO's "how-to" guide to military duties in garrison and in the field. It covers of all ranks and services: infantry, cavalry, artillery, ordnance, quartermaster, signal, saddlers, hospital stewards, cooks, bands, as well as spies, pickets, expressmen, special forces. There is much quaint yet practical advice on survival, cooking and nutrition, pay, punishment, prisoners of war, and many long-extinct soldier skills. It contains the Articles of War used during the Civil War.
About the Author: August Kautz (1826-1896) was a captain in the Sixth U.S. Cavalry and a brigadier general of U.S. volunteers during the Civil War. He is the author of several other military handbooks.
