Octavo, pp. [1-7] 8 [9-11] 12-333 [334-336: ads], title leaf is a cancel tipped in on stub, twelve inserted plates with illustrations by Harold Piffard, title page printed in orange and black, original pictorial bevel-edged green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black and gold, pictorial paper inlay on front panel, t.e.g., other edges untrimmed. First edition, first issue. Locke (in Spectrum II) speculates that the first issue most likely occurs with integral title leaf but this does not appear to be the case. The reason for a tipped in title leaf is unclear, but perhaps all were issued thus because the leaf, printed in orange and black, was prepared separately. An excellent lost race adventure novel in which ancient Lemurians survive in New Zealand. A variation on the "She" theme and comparable to the work of A. Merritt. Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 422. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 113 and A Spectrum of Fantasy Volume II, p. 141. Bleiler (1978), p. 100. Reginald 07265. A touch of rubbing to cloth at spine ends and corner tips, a bright, nearly fine copy. This issue is very uncommon, especially in this condition. (#172022). Seller Inventory # 172022
