Unknown publisher. 1678. 4 leaves. Folio. Bound in an old vellum indenture. Half-title in manuscript followed by a manuscript record quoting a "Lucky Day" from Hone's Everyday Book (1687). Slight damp-staining in the margins with a few short tears in the margins. John Gibbon makes use of rich literary and historical references to map the lucky and unlucky fortune of James, Duke of York's future. Authoritatively citing royalty for both Britain as well as Continental Europe, Gibbon makes ominous 'observations' such as, "The Sixth of January" being "five times auspicious to Charles Duke of Anjou." He also draws from notable prophetic figures such as Nostradamus who foretold, "A memorable Peace [¿] much conducing to the faving of Christian Blood, was made upon the Fourteenth of October, 1557." He makes a list of coincidences that happened on particular days of the week. The publication date adds further significance as it was published on the eve of The Exclusion Crisis between 1679 through to 1681 in which King Charles II sought to exclude the Duke of York from occupying the thrones of England, Scotland, and Ireland for being Roman Catholic. A rare and foreboding piece of prophesy. It was later reprinted in John Aubrey's Miscellanies (1696) as well as The Harlein Miscellany collated and edited by Samuel Johnson and William Oldys. A second impression was made in 1686, however we know this to be earlier as it lacks Gibbon's additions. Only one sales record (1947). FATALISM: Auspicious and Ominous Days.
