1st Printing. 306 pages. Published in 1997. The author's diaries. One of Rainer Maria Rilke's most valuable books. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Rainer Maria Rilke's "Tagebucher aus der Fruhzeit" in magisterial English translations. His record of his development as a poet and novelist. His philosophical, poetic, and just as important, personal growth is revealed through three diaries, written between 1898 and 1900, first published in German in wartime 1942, and now finally translated into English for the very first time by Edward Snow and Michael Winkler. Among pivotal Modernist writers, only Kafka's Diaries are as absorbing, as important, and as illuminating to our understanding of the link between Romanticism and Modernism as an indispensable achievement. An absolute "must-have" title for Rainer Maria Rilke collectors. This title is a great collection. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (American) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws or are in multiple subsequent printings. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce copy thus. One of the greatest poet/writers of the 20th century. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER RAINER MARIA RILKE TITLE IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0393045536.…
