First U.S. edition. Originally published in France in 1932 as "La Double Mort de Frédéric Belot". Faint tan offsetting to the endpapers, minor edge wear, else a near fine, tight copy in pictorial cloth. Frederic Belot, a master detective, is found shot twice and dying in his home by his godson, Inspector Simon Riviere. In the adjoining room, Simon and his police discover another shooting victim--but this one is dead. The victim bears a startling resemblance to Belot and appears to be his twin. After investigation by the police doctor it is discovered that the corpse was wearing a disguise and when removed there was only a slight resemblance to Belot. Further investigation of the double murder brings about startling and bizarre results in this French whodunit. The inclusion of four floor plans assists the reader in this Golden Age era detective novel. This first novel was well received by the French public and he would write others. *Aveline was a member of the French underground movement against the Nazis during WW II and was awarded the French Legion of Honor for his services. A Scarce first U.S. edition. Seller Inventory # ABE-1622426163176
