Add to basketDR. THERNE by H. Rider Haggard, published in London in 1898 by Longmans, Green & Company. First edition. Original brown cloth, brown-stamped front board & spine. No dust jacket. Condition fine. Corners and spine head/tail slightly bumped. Boards fresh and clean. No bookplate, no markings on endpapers or internally. Small pasted tag of previous London bookseller on front free endpaper. No foxing or toning. Hinges sound, Textblock tight. Size duodecimo 7 1/8? tall, 319 pages. A very nice copy. About a smallpox epidemic that sweeps England. Written in response to weakening compulsory smallpox vaccination laws, thus entering one of the most heated debates of the late nineteenth century. With Dr. Therne, Haggard aimed to intervene in the lives of the many working-class anti-vaccinationists who, from the 1850s onwards, mobilized to evade what they perceived as a gross and targeted extension of state power at the expense of individual rights.
