First edition, limited to 176 copies signed by Oates, twenty-six of which are lettered and reserved for the use of the author and publisher. Copy E. Sewn stiff paper wraps with French-fold flaps and printed label and plastic dustwrapper. Designed and printed by Robert Gordon at The Oliphant Press. This copy is also inscribed and dated by Oates to her publisher, Evelyn Shrift, at Vanguard, who published her first books. "For Evelyn, with very best wishes, as always - Joyce 2/8/74." Faint extremity toning and few small edge wrinkles, mostly on the front wrap. Near Fine condition. Oates' signature and especially her inscription are in her former flowing, cursive style which differs from her later minimalist-print signatures. Seller Inventory # 50723
