About this Item

Description:

The first appearance in print of Dagon, and the first of Lovecraft's tales to introduce a Cthulhu Mythos element by way of the sea deity Dagon, published here in the eleventh issue of the amateur periodical The Vagrant. Near Fine slightly brittle, with light wear, short closed tear to head of spine, shallow indentations to covers and toning throughout. Housed in a custom clamshell case, quarter red morocco over brown cloth, title and date in gilt to spine. A scarce item, well preserved in a very attractive case. After reading Lovecraft's juvenilia in 1917, W. Paul Cook, editor of The Vagrant, encouraged him to resume writing fiction. That summer, Lovecraft wrote two stories: "The Tomb" and "Dagon". The story was inspired in part by a dream he had. "I dreamed that whole hideous crawl, and can yet feel the ooze sucking me down!" he later wrote. This was one of the first stories Lovecraft wrote as an adult. Joshi I-B-i-13. Seller Inventory # 140947172
