About this Item
A scarce first edition of this charming collection of poetical verses, by George Robert Sims. First edition of the work, rebound in half calf binding with cloth to the boards. Written by English journalist, poet and novelist, George Robert Sims. Initially, Sims became known for his satirical pieces for 'Fun' Magazine, although he then used his platform to address social reform, focusing on the poor conditions in areas of London. In 1877, Sims began contributing to 'The Referee' sports and entertainments magazine, using the pseudonym Dagonet. This was so successful that compilations of these works were published, including this work, 'The Dagonet Ballads'. With a bookseller label of James Mckenzie to the front paste down, and a Gowans & Gray bookbinder label to the rear paste down. In half calf binding, with cloth boards. Externally, smart, with slight rubbing to the extremities and the odd mark. Light rubbing to the spine. Fading to the rear board. Light offsetting and the occasional mark to endpapers. Bookseller and bookbinder label to the front and rear paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Very Good. Seller Inventory # 877Q16
