Calcutta: W. Newman & Co., 1879, rare FIRST Edition. Octavo. In the publisher s original green cloth, worn and a little loose in the binding. Binding has been done recently with new end papers added. Text with some marks and creases but generally sound, overall a very good copy. Genuinely uncommon in any edition, COPAC records a first and second in the BL, first and fifth in the Wellcome, and a second at Leeds University; OCLC adds a copy of the first at the University of Pennsylvania, a second in NYPL, a copy of the fifth at Harvard, and copies of the sixth of 1908 at University of California, San Diego, National Library of South Africa. Intended to provide ….a Cookery Book which our cooks could read, in which they could find a simple clear account of the dishes they have to make, instead of being as heretofore dependent on a garbled, inaccurate, vague viva voce translation . To that end an Urdu version was produced. Although the dishes set forth may seem to be fairly typical of the Victorian British kitchen, the anonymous author has paid a good deal of attention to the preparation of vegetables, eggs, macaroni, &c. … People, as a rule, scarcely realise how agreeable a diet in which meat now plays too important a part may be varied by the introduction of vegetable and farinaceous food, especially during hot weather. . Condition Report Externally Spine fair to good condition gilt titles and gilt decoration, rubbed and worn to the top and base with some loss. Joints good condition structurally sound, rubbed and worn. Corners good condition bumped, rubbed and worn. Boards good condition gilt titles to the front board, blind stamped patterns, rubbed and worn. Page edges good condition darkened to the top, tanned elsewhere. See above and photos.
