Item description from seller

New York: George H. Doran Company, [n.d. but 1926]. Presumed First American Edition with GHD initials on title page verso, though dust jacket lacks price. Octavo (19.5cm.); publisher's cloth in tan pictorial dust jacket, grey topstain; 304pp. Jacket a bit chipped with a few small closed tears to extremities, bottom half of front flap fold split, small loss mid-front panel affecting image but not text; some brief exposure of boards from shelf wear, else a Very Good copy in Good or better jacket. Morality tale by the English author of more than 200 detective novels, this rather unfavorably compared to Thomas Hardy's Far From the Madding Crowd by one contemporary reviewer. Date of publication based on American review dates and OCLC no. 5669552.
