Housed in the super-rare first state DJ that states "The Book of the Month Club Selection" on the bottom line on the front of the DJ. In 1947, the Modern Library tweaked the DJ ever so slightly to now read "A Book of the Month Club Selection." In short, the first state DJ has "The" as the first word on the last sentence on the front, and the second state DJ drops 'The' in place of 'A'. If that wasn't confusing enough, the copyright page states 1941, which is misleading as this title was really published by the Modern Library in 1946. The only way you would know that is with a First Modern Library Edition statement, that includes the 1946 date; yet later ML printings that were not first printings dropped that slug, and the 1946 date, so they presume they have a 1941 published book; incorrectly. Anyway, this book is tight. Binding and hinges are sound. A touch of sun-darkening along edges. Book's only flaw is 4 tiny pieces of vintage tape that held a DJ protector in place, many years ago, on the endpapers. Each piece is one-quarter of an inch, square (tiny.) DJ lists 309 titles on inverse, and has a 95 cents price intact on flap. Desirable DJ has a couple of tiny chips and a shallow chip at crown. A very nice copy of the classic, in a rare First Modern Library Edition (stated), first printing, in the very rare, correct, first state DJ, with bottom line on front beginning with the word 'The.' Koestler's timeless, anti-totalitarian classic about an Old Bolshevik who is arrested, imprisoned, and tried for treason against the government that he helped to create. VG+/VG.
