It explains database technology in terms of technical rather than commercial data, with examples chosen from science and engineering. The book emphasizes the fact that if a database is to be effective it has to provide information to some group of users. It may be that the group of users consists only of the person building the database, but usually it is for a much wider group of people. In either case it is self-evident that if a database is to be successful it must meet some need of the people who are going to use it. This book places a large emphasis on the users of the database system and consequently on both the uses and nature of technical data and of technical databases. A chapter is devoted to the user interface and another to the dissemination of data to users. The latter part of the book discusses the necessity to find out what the users need when a database is being planned and designed and a chapter on expert systems is included as these are often associated with databases in science and engineering.A short section on object-oriented databases puts this new development in context for the non-specialist reader. A guide for scientists and engineers who use computers to avoid drowning in a flood of data. It dispels the myths associated with database design and breaks the barriers to successful databases. It presents an overview of technical databases using examples taken from real applications and the state of technical databases.
