About this Item
Illustrated first edition of this fictionalised portrait of 19th century writer Laure Junot, née Permon, a vivacious woman in Napoleon's court A first edition of Catherine Bearne's historical fiction about 19th century aristocrat Laure Junot, née Permon, with 20 illustrations, collated and complete. This work is one of several historical fictions authored by Bearne that focus on women belonging to Napoleon's court, who also published a work about heroines in French society. By all accounts Laure Junot was a vivacious woman, and this fictionalised portrait offers insight into the wit, beauty, extravagance of the figure. Unhappily married to French General Jean-Andoch Junot, it is believed that Laure had several affairs, and was a lover of Honoré de Balzac who reportedly encouraged her to write famous memoirs that painted Napoleon unfavourably. Some small clusters of unopened pages . Illustration on page 191 hidden due to this. One page of adverts for other works by Bearne at the rear. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, rubbed to the front board and a little to the back, but spine remains in good condition. Lightly bumped to the head of the spine, and a little more bumped to the tail, but minimal wear to the extremities. Internally, generally firmly bound with a little strain at pages 80 to 81. Some small clusters of unopened pages. Pages generally bright and clean, with foxing limited to the preliminaries. Good. Seller Inventory # 841N14
