A scarce early C19th Wesleyan hymn book. Undated. WorldCat lists nine holdings. British library suggests 1803. Their copy is defective. The musical arrangement and composition aims to steer a middle path between the austere and not so ornate that it deflects from the religious sentiment expressed. Edward Miller (1735-1807) is principally associated with Doncaster where he was organist for 50 years. He was a flautist with Handel's orchestra when young. He was a composer and a friend of Herschel, discoverer of the planet Uranus. He also wrote 'The History and Antiquities of Doncaster and its Vicinity'. This copy has defects, please read description carefully. The spine has been professionally renewed in leather with title label. Marbled boards with scuffs and rubbed to the edges. Inside, marbled end papers with cloth strip reinforcement to the gutters. The engraved title page and last page have been backed. The title page is stained with a couple of small areas of loss to the margins towards the bottom corner. There is a section of loss to p.5/6 with loss of music and text. Repairs to tears on 3 pages.
