First edition thus with16 full page illustrations including a tissue guarded frontispiece by Laslett J. Pott. Publisher's smooth and pebbled brown cloth with design and ruled in black, lettered in silver on cover and spine, dark brown end pages. Identical to the Spencer Blacket version released in 1890, but without Author's Note as described in Scott 2 and Whatmore F1 (6b). Undated, but likely 1890. First issue without thirty nine thousandth on title page; no ads. London: Griffith and Farran (n.d. 1890), 371 pages. A good copy with edge wear mainly at spine ends and tips, spine lean, 1893 inscription on half-title page, cracked book block and a section standing tall.
