About this Item

First American hardcover edition, published by Doubleday, 1898. Collection of twelve stories; 007, Maltese Cat, Bread Upon The Waters, The Ship That Found Itself, The Devil and The Deep Sea, and 7 more. The American hardcover was published just a few weeks before the English hardcover. This copy does have the corrected 'o' in the 'into' on page 189. 432 pages, 5-3/4" X 8-1/4". Dark green cloth covered boards, with the title in gold on the front board and spine panel, ship illustration pressed on the front cover board. Cover boards are flat, corners are just slightly bumped in. Back panel has a spots of rubbing wear at the lower right corner. Edge wear to the top and bottom edges with spots of fraying at the spine panel corners. No former ownership marks, no writing on the text pages. Spots of age tanning to the spine gutter at the front and back. Includes six full page b&w illustrations. Frontispiece illustration of locomotive 007 retains the tissue guard page. Binding is intact and tight though it does show the beginnings of cracking in the gutters. Uneven and untrimmed page edges as this edition needed to have its text pages cut. Gilt top-edge is intact, with some scuff marks. Not a library discard copy. Attached are some photos of the copy we have in our inventory.
