Nathan Roscoe Pound (1870 - 1964) was a distinguished American legal scholar and educator. He was Dean of Harvard Law School from 1916 to 1936. During Roosevelt's first term, Pound initially supported the New Deal, but in 1937, Pound turned against the New Deal and the legal realist movement after Roosevelt proposed packing the federal courts and bringing independent agencies into the executive branch. That same year Pound resigned as Dean of Harvard Law School to become a University Professor and soon became a leading critic of the legal realists. After World War II Pound served as adviser to the Nationalist China Ministry of Justice (1946-1949) helping reorganizing the Nationalist Chinese judicial system. These lectures and notes preserved by Francis Xavier Dwyer, who was librarian at the Harvard Law Library from 1931 until 1941. F. X. Dwyer (1902 - 1987) received a B. A. From Harvard University in 1923 and an M. A. The following year. After obtaining a law degree from Northweastern University, Dwyer returned to Harvard where he was librarian at the Harvard Law Library from 1931 until 1941; subsequently, spending decades as librarian at the Law Library of Library of Congress. Roscoe Pound was Dwyer's mentor and colleague for many years both at Harvard Law Library and the Library of Congress Law Library. Dwyer was co-author of a widely used textbook: "Introduction to the Study of Law, " by Edmund M. Morgan and Francis X.
