Add to basket"DEATH BOARDS THE 'LAZY LADY'" by Ruth Darby with its original dust jacket. 1939 1st edition (stated); Published for "The Crime Club" by Doubleday, Doran & Company; New York. The book is a mystery novel, and the first in a series featuring the detective duo Peter Barron and Janet Allen. The story begins when a luxury yacht named the Lazy Lady sets sail from New York for a cruise into Southern waters. The ship is owned by Peter Barron, a wealthy Wall Street man. He fills the guest list with an eclectic, self-important group of celebrities from the stage and screen. Tension quickly builds on board due to interpersonal drama. Among the passengers are two rival women vying for Peter Barron's affections?one at the peak of her beauty and fame, and another whose star is starting to wane. The entire voyage is narrated by Janet Allen, Barron's sharp-witted secretary. By the time the yacht docks at St. Thomas in the Caribbean, the leisurely cruise has turned into a crime scene as two passengers have died. The book established a classic "closed-circle" drawing-room style mystery on the high seas, which Darby continued in several sequels where Peter and Janet (who later marry) solve high-society crimes.
