Zandee's original doctoral dissertation, presented at the Leiden University, July 1960. This was his second doctor's degree after he obtained his Doctor of Theology degree in 1948. The dissertation, translated from the Dutch manuscript, was published simultaneously in "Studies in the History of Religions, Supplements to 'Numen' V".
