Publishing a small, well-made book to commemorate the dedication of a monument was apparently fairly common in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, much more common than we see it now. Here's one dedicated to the men from Boston who lost their lives during the Civil War. The full title of the book is: "Army and Navy Monument Memorial- Dedication of the Monument on Boston Common Erected to the Memory of the Men Who Died in the Civil War." This medium-sized hard cover book is both well made and well preserved, virtually untouched! The book is bound in forest green boards with a gilt emblem of the City of Boston on the cover and handsome gilt titles on the narrow spine. The covers have embossed framing and are beveled to the edge. I have added a photo of the List of Illustrations so that you can see the list of the ten tissue-guarded plates. Condition: This book is in near fine condition. The hard covers are clean, bright and handsome with some very light bumping to the corners and spine tips and one small patch of bubbling and discoloration to the finish along the base of the rear board. Inside, the book is unmarked and the pages and plates are clean and bright throughout, without toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact (although the front hinge is a bit brittle and cracked) and the binding is tight, sound and square. Some of the sheaths are slightly loosened but still well attached. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.…
