Hatch and his small family of hatchetfish, along with Nardo, a Dumbo octopus, set out to discover the truth about the mysterious bright world.
Along the way, those they meet are also afraid and each provides a lesson.
When no one can remove his children s fears, Hatch makes a courageous decision.
"I think that's what being afraid does, Hatch says, looking up. It keeps us from seeing the beautiful and wonderful things around us. Keeps us from enjoying them. I don't want to be afraid anymore, and I don't want my children to be afraid and miss everything wonderful around them. I will go, and if I can, I will come back to tell you all what is hiding up there behind our fear. I love you."
Deep Dark: A Bedtime Tale appeals to readers of any age with both simple and nuanced concepts for discussion as the children you love gain new insights.
The tale is also a parable, mirroring a great man who lived two thousand years ago and still inspires us today because he left safety and comfort, traveled to a bright world and came back to take away the fear no one else could.
