Rogues and Traitors, Thieves and Liars, Jugglers and Gamblers, Foxes and Apes, Snakes and Reptiles, Tinkling Bells and Cymbals, on each wide surround us, while 'vile men are exalted!'" - from the Prologue, Number II. "The Otago Hog has gone" - page 64. "Went to the Water of Leith Vale. Penetrated to a third flat, at the foot of Flagstaff. Embowered in forests, whose light and shade, with warbling birds, running stream and brilliant sun over-head, send a pleasant thrill through the heart. Along a half-formed road, about two miles above the glen, emerged on a green oasis of cleared land, with a neat stone cottage, the romantic abode of Mr. Dougleas. His little garden is in process of formation. View from the cottage door, overhanging the garden, and about five acres of cleared land, compartively level, formed by the junction of these glades and the towering mountains around, is truly picturesque. A huge trunk of a tree is being excavated before the door." - page 86. "Macdonald makes some queer observations on Henry Vaughan, who 'developes his mysticism upwards, with relation to his higher nature alive [. . .]'" - page 131. Diverse speculations and observations, weather, literary reflections, religion, Presbyterianism, spiritualism, classics. "Printed for the Proprietor, Mr. J. G. S. Grant, by Mills, Dick & Co., at their Registered Printing Office, Stafford street, Dunedin." - page 48. Grant was the first Rector of the High School of Otago, a "Scottish born and educated eccentric" - Bagnall. ; 8vo. Seller Inventory # 20657
