Folio. Quarter blue morocco, gilt, top edge gilt. Covers slightly marked, some mild fading of upper cover. "I suppose that probably, over the greater part of its existence, no collection of documents, public or private, has had a calmer or more uneventful passage through the centuries than those that have come to be called the 'Cecil Papers', that is, the correspondence of William Cecil, Lord Burghley, the Lord High Treasurer of Queen Elizabeth I, and of his son Robert Cecil, who succeeded him in many of his offices. At the time of Robert's death, the papers were at Salisbury House, his residence in the Strand. There they seem to have remained until near the end of the seventeenth century, when they were moved to Hatfield House, in Hertfordshire; and at Hatfield they have remained ever since" (foreword). Many magnificent double-page colour plates; Summerson contributes an essay on "Lord Burghley and Architecture" ("No Englishman of the reign of Elizabeth I can have been so deeply and continuously engaged in the promotion of building works as was William Cecil . . ."). "Litho now printing the maps for Lord Salisbury's Roxburghe Club book, and making a good job of it" (Vivian Ridler, Diary of a Master Printer, 11 March 1971). Seller Inventory # 30M100112
