vii, 402 pages. A pleasing unsophisticated example of the first US edition, in second state covers, of Hardy's first published novel. Gilt titles faded on spine. Edges tanned. Spine rolled forward half an inch. Front pastedown and endpaper recto show soiling. Hinges and all pages fully secure and binding sound. Generally a clean and unmarked interior: occasional spot of foxing or small stain to minority of leaves and in three or four instances heavier as seen in photo. The two leaves pp. 317-320 show printer's error of top folded and slightly proud at top edge. Seller Inventory # Books006790
