Item description from seller

First Edition. xii, 299 pp. Original cloth. Near Fine, in very good+ dust jacket. 'Sir Arthur Eddington, shortly before his death in November 1944, separated from his other papers the nearly completed manuscript of a book on what may be termed structural physics. This was published by the Cambridge University Press under the supervision of Sir Edmund Whittaker, who gave it the title Fundamental Theory. Eddington found the book difficult to write; for it appears that he wrote most of it at least five or six times. He preserved a substantial part of these earlier versions in the form of neat manuscript chapters. I collated these manuscripts in detail, with each other and with the final version; and this book is based on the collation' (p. 1).
