In an attempt to answer his own questions on the development of educated riding in the Western world, Littauer has produced a highly detailed work. Involved in riding since 1927, he makes some interesting and sometimes controversial points. Especially complimentary of the American contributions to riding, he asserts that riding is not a static sport, but one that has developed and changed, which fits nicely with the American spirit. The chapter "What Europe Thinks Today" is a miniature annotated bibliography commenting on many of the classics in riding literature. The specialist in the areas of dressage and show jumping will find this work appealing, though it is at times rather ponderous. Also, dressage purists may disagree with some of the author's comments, while proponents of the forward seat will hail his insights. Purchase this only to meet demand.
