A searching blend of memoir, film criticism, and cultural commentary in which Baldwin examines the ways American cinema has represented or distorted Black life and American racial politics. Baldwin lays bare the racial anxieties, hypocrisies, and illusions embedded in mainstream entertainment while examining iconic Hollywood films, including The Birth of a Nation, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, and The Exorcist.
