8vo, xi, 354 pp. Includes index. Bound in full black cloth titled in red, and housed in the publisher's original printed dust jacket. Illustrated with black and white plates. The rare first edition of this critical study of the Devil and Satanism, written by the enigmatic and paripatetic professor who made the subject his specialty. Rudwin was born in Polan in 1885, and in 1906 emigrated to the US, where he studied and taught at a staggering number of universities including Purdue, Johns Hopkins, Columbia, Swarthmore, the University of Texas, and even as far west as the University of Wyoming in Laramie. Rudwin published a number of critical works and anthologies, and also published extensively in the journal Open Court - the same imprint which issued this work in 1931. The book is dedicated to Paul Carus, the German-born editor of the press. Later reprinted in the 1970's, this edition is exceedingly difficult to find in the trade, especially in dust jacket. Very faint and dissipating fragrance of tobacco to pages, and toning to the endpapers but still near fine, in a very good jacket that is a bit ragged at the edges and toned at the spine, with a small fragment of cellotape affixed to back panel.
