Publication: London, Collins, 1953. Formatting: 8vo, pp. 511. Condition Report: Very Good. The book is bound in the publisher's original plum cloth, which remains remarkably clean and square, with bright, unoxidised gilt lettering to the spine. The text block is tight and secure; the top edge shows some typical age-related darkening, while the fore and bottom edges are lightly toned but free from heavy foxing or dampstaining. Internally, the pages are clean and crisp, barring a neat, contemporary ownership inscription in blue ink to the front free endpaper dated January 1954. The original dust jacket, notable for its striking design by Barnett Freedman, is equally well-preserved and also graded Very Good. It retains its vibrant colours without significant fading to the spine, though it exhibits minor rubbing to the extremities and slight, localised wear at the spine head, tail, and flap corners. The jacket is now housed in a removable protective sleeve to prevent further wear. Catalogue Note: This volume represents the first British edition of John Howard Griffin's debut novel. The evocative and surreal dust jacket is the work of acclaimed British artist Barnett Freedman, whose lithographic designs remain highly sought after by collectors of mid-century book illustration. The front free endpaper bears a small, neat ownership inscription reading "P. L. E. / Penang - Malaya. / January 1954.". This early colonial association adds a modest yet intriguing layer of historical provenance to the copy. Given the book's fragile mid-century paper stock, encountering a true first edition with its original jacket so remarkably intact and vibrant is increasingly uncommon on the open market. Written during a decade of blindness resulting from a wartime injury, John Howard Griffin's staggering debut novel delves deep into the spiritual and physical conflicts of the human condition. The narrative follows a young American musicologist studying Gregorian chant at a French monastery. Caught between the austere, disciplined sanctity of the monks and the carnal, worldly temptations of the surrounding village, he is plunged into an intense psychological struggle. Griffin’s masterful exploration of faith, flesh, and redemption offers a visceral portrait of a man torn between two irreconcilable worlds. …
