First UK Edition (first printing), issued a year after the more common US edition. 8vo. 511pp. Purple cloth lettered and ruled in gold at the spine. Top edge dust soiled and with a touch of bruising to two corner tips. Very good indeed in the handsome Barnett Freedman-designed pictorial dust wrapper, non-price-clipped, but a little chafed and chipped at the extremities with two short closed tears and a little accompanying creasing. The author's first novel, a mystery set in a post-war French monastery and in-part inspired by his own conversion to Roman Catholicism a year prior to publication. In 1961 Griffin published his most celebrated work, 'Black Like Me', an account of his efforts to pass as a black man in the Deep South in the late fifties to study racial equality and segregation first-hand.
