The North Pole has been reached by many people in many ways. But to contemplate traveling across the drifting ice on foot, hauling sledges loaded with enough food, fuel & equipment to sustain life for 100 days, requires men with a rare strain of polar madness. Contending with unseasonable & cripplingly cold temperatures, plus the debilitating pain of frostbite & young thin ice cracking up all around them, they knew that the slightest error of judgment would probably kill them. But there was always the intoxicating wildness & beauty of it all, the thrill of the challenge & their own indomitable wills to keep them going. Color photos.
