By its very nature, the discipline of philosophy does not give itself easily to precise dictionary definitions and the bias of this book is therefore towards explaining terminology. With this point in mind Dr. Lacey takes some of the most common terms and notions and clarifies what they mean to the philosopher and what sort of problems the philosopher finds associated with them. The emphasis is on bringing out the general flavour and importance of terms rather than giving over-precise definitions which may mislead.Widely applied terms and those in the most central subjects - for example, metaphysics, epistemology and philosophical logic - are treated most fully. Other subjects - for example, ethics, politics and aesthetics - are also covered with constant reference to terms and concepts from the central subjects. Some terms from mathematical logic and linguistic theory are included when they occur widely in general philosophy or traditional logic.
