A rough, but entirely original copy. Brown leather binding with a faint, embossed State of Texas seal on the front cover. Laid in at the front is a handwritten card to one-time United States district judge Ben Clarkson Connally reading, "Dear Ben, This book was formerly owned by your grandfather. It is the oldest law book in Marlin, and I wish you would keep it and pass it to your children. It has some very interesting old laws, as compared with our modern statutes. The old slave laws and the colonization laws are interesting". Can't make out the subsequent signature, but the last name may be Bartlett. The front endpage of the book is inscribed, "To Ben Connally from ?? Bartlett(?)". As mentioned previously, the book is in rough shape. Front cover is detached. There's some loss to the leather at the head and foot of the spine, as well as a bit of loss to the red title label on the spine, though most of its text remains intact. Handwritten on the rear cover is the (presumed) old Marlin law firm name of Goodrich & Clarkson. Contents with some toning, sporadic dampstaining and foxing, but remains quite legible and appears to be complete. A small, but very dark stain affects the bottom corner of the last fifty or so pages.
